White sage is associated with the rain god, Tlaloc, and is believed to heal “watery” diseases. Indeed, it is a diuretic (increases urinary output) and diaphoretic (increases sweat).
White Sage is widely considered both a medicinal and a sacred plant. Place a poultice directly on the abdomen to alleviate colic. Grind it up with water and give it in drops to babies to help them eliminate phlegm.
Children can chew the leaves directly. Add sage to a bathtub and soak to reduce the pain of arthritis and rheumatism. Make a tea for stomach and abdominal pain, or cook it over a slow fire, to make a remedy for cough, asthma, and diarrhea. Mix it with corn paste and place it over the heart to stop vertigo and dizziness. White sage tea alleviates morning sickness, just like ginger.
White sage is considered a sacred plant and burned throughout the Americas by indigenous peoples for purification (limpias).
The essential oil extracted from white sage has been demonstrated to relieve diarrhea. Some of the natural products are sesquiterpene lactones, polyacetylenes, alkaloids, monoterpenes, flavonoids, and other phenolics.
The sesquiterpene lactones in particular are noted for their anti-inflammatory properties. These products relax smooth muscles to heal gastrointestinal disorders. Compounds found in white sage alter the metabolism and toxicity of waste products within the body. It also has antifungal properties.
Water extracts have been shown to inhibit Helicobacter Pylori, the bacteria responsible for the development of gastritis and ulcers.
NOTE: White sagebrush should not be used internally by pregnant or nursing women.

Alfredo: Mom, my stomach hurts, I have diarrhea, and I have already vomited twice today. I think I need some penicillin and a shot.
Sra. Guerrero: No, these things might not be necessary. I’m going to make you a white sage tea to drink right away, and then later I’m going to make you another one. Let’s see if we can treat you this way first.
Alfredo: Do you think that will help me?
Sra. Guerrero: Oh, my child… I have been using white sage for many, many years. Before me, my mother and my grandmother always used it too. Don’t worry Alfredo. You will get better very quickly by drinking white sage.
Alfredo: Why?
Sra. Guerrero: Well, that’s because it is used for parasites, diarrhea, intestinal problems, and many other things. Now, drink your cup of tea because it’s ready and you’ll start feeling better.
The nahuatl word for White Sagebrush is Itzauhyatl.
